Forecasting fur for fall 2013

Vancouver Fashion Week saw a lot of fur on the runway this season. Ukrainian designer Roksolana Bogutska set the bar high Saturday night with her exquisite coats. I was able to meet with Roksolana and see/gingerly touch her collection backstage. Fashion week can be exhausting, and Roksolana’s furs felt so dreamy, I was tempted to ask if I could curl up and hibernate in one for an hour or so. But these are mens parka coat that are meant to be seen. Coats that epitomize glamour/elegance/femme fatale-type coolness. Roksolana is on my radar now for sure. Her coats are divine, but I would suggest checking out her website to be blown away by her intricate evening dresses and beautiful leather work as well.

Fur was also a staple of Seattle designer Carole McClellan’s collection. Her pieces were a little more modern, a little more urban than Roksolana’s. Carole showcased fur looks for both men and women. It is actually the piece worn by the male model that I asked Carole if I could be waitlisted for (disclaimer: waitlisted for the vest, not the male model).

Carole has logged a lot of hours working in tanneries and has an intimate understanding of leathers and furs. She has also worked with rock stars (designing for Chris Cornell, Alice in Chains and Heart), and has a good idea of how to dress someone to feel like they can do anything. I can’t imagine wearing this vest, hood up/shades on, without feeling like a rock star.
Roksolana and Carole were not alone in showcasing fur. London’s Nova Chiu dyed rabbit fur and deer hide bright hues of fuchsia, turquoise and yellow. Turkey’s Ipek Tohumcu presented laser-cut mens leather jacket and dresses trimmed with black fur. The forecast is clear that fall season is fur season. So save the windbreakers and anoraks for the days you really are hiking, and see how incorporating fur into your fashion feels.

Robots do seem to be doing their bit in elbowing their way into our lives, and in the case of this particular jeans store which proved to be a dream of a previous Amazon executive, he has decided to employ the help of robots to assist men that drop by his store locate the correct jeans size. After all, do you agree that most men tend to bulge around the waist from a certain age onwards (or after marriage)? The store is located in Seattle’s Wallingford neighborhood, where designer jeans will hang from metal racks that are attached to the ceiling, making the QR code tags easily accessible.

Arvada Crime Blotter: Man hides beer in pants

Man harasses city code enforcer. Arvada police were dispatched to the 16000 block of West 62nd Place on Feb. 26 when a distraught city code enforcement officer reported being verbally assaulted by a man she was investigating. Neighbors had called code enforcement to report that the man plowed huge piles of snow into the cul-de-sac and parked his truck on the sidewalk, blocking pedestrians. The code officer was taking pictures of the truck when the man lunged for her camera and screamed profanities. She filed a harassment case.
Drug arrest a cry for help. Police were patrolling businesses near the 5700 block of Sheridan Frontage Road on Feb. 26 when they observed a single parked car in a lot. Police contacted the passengers — a man, his wife and another woman — and when the man’s wife reached for her ID, police saw a small bag of methamphetamine in her pocket. She was arrested and later told officers she could have hid the drugs but showed them so she could get help.
Prank caller threatens woman. On Feb. 23, police made contact with a female resident who said an unknown man called her house, yelled at her son and said he knew where she lived. The woman told police that the man had been calling her for several months to say she won $1 million. She told him multiple times to stop. The woman was advised to call police if the man called again.
Trio dines, ditches. The manager at Applebee’s, West 52nd Avenue and Wadsworth Boulevard, reported a “dine and dash” Feb. 21. Two men and one woman ordered $99 worth of food — six meals — and left without paying. The manager took down their license plate, and police arranged a lineup of the suspects. No employees positively identified the suspects, however, so they were released.
Hides beer in pants for men. Police saw two suspicious men walking in the road at West 52nd Avenue and Carr Street on Feb. 21. According to officers, they smelled like beer so they ran identification checks. One man eventually revealed that he was under a court order not to have alcohol. Police searched him and found a half-empty can of High Gravity “PB” malt liquor in his pants. He was taken into custody.

Bride-to-be Blogger Carly: I Finally Got My Wedding Shoes!

Bride-to-be Blogger Carly: I Finally Got My Wedding Shoes! (With a Little Help From Mom)
Well, ladies, I did it! (Or, I sort of did it, chickened out, and then my mom did it for me). Either way, I am now in the possession of my wedding shoes! (Even if I did kick and scream all the way to the register). {Ed Note: In case you do not recall, Carly is afflicted with a disturbing and inexplicable disdain for shoe shopping. Read about it here.}
istock photo bride shoes Bride to be Blogger Carly: I Finally Got My Wedding Shoes!
Last weekend, my mom and I scoured the King of Prussia mall searching for the least mother-of-the bride-looking dress for the mother of this bride.  We visited each department store and some specialty stores as well, looking for her perfect dress. The tricky part was finding something that wasn’t super matronly (I have a hot mom!) but was still tasteful and not a bridesmaid dress. This charge was harder than it might sound, and my mom tried on quite a few dresses. In the end, though, we left the mall with two great contenders that she can decide between in the next three months (at no penalty so long as all tags are attached).
While we were at the mall, we decided that I should browse for my wedding shoes (yuck). As I mentioned before, I detest shoe shopping and am not afraid to admit it. My mom, on the other hand, loves shoes, so she encouraged me to look around. Part of the problem is I don’t really know what I want. I decided that I don’t want white, but was still iffy as to whether I wanted to go with mint (my bridesmaid dress color) or silver (I just love the sparkle!). I was hoping that putting the shoes on would help make my decision easier, but I was wrong.
There were two dance shoes that caught my eye in Macy’s, one mint and one sparkly-silver. I handed both to the salesman and waited for my size eights to appear. I took off my boots in anticipation and realized that my feet were in no condition to be trying on wedding shoes. I looked at my feet in horror, trying to wrack my brain as to why I haven’t gotten a pedi (or at least a polish change, for crying out loud) in months.  So, there I stood, chipped-polish toes, trying to pick the women high heel shoes I’m going to wear on this day I’ve dreamed of (and planned for) for so long. And, as princessy as it sounds, I just couldn’t pick a pair because I just wasn’t feeling in the right state of feet to do so.  (I’m admitting this to you, my readers, because I think it’s important to share how ridiculous and nutso wedding planning can make you!) So, I told my mom I needed to think it over and ushered her out to look at more MOB dresses.
I conveniently forgot to make a decision and, as we finally left the mall, my mom said, “What about shoes?!?”
“I just can’t.” I told her, “I’ll figure it out later.”
Well, my mom was not taking “later” as an answer, not when we have dresses to hem. (No, I haven’t visited a tailor yet. Yes, I know I’m cutting it close!) Two days later, my mom sent me a picture message of the sparkly-silver shoe letting me know that she’d found them in my size at another mall, and was taking them home with her.
I don’t think I’ve been too difficult in this whole wedding-planning process, but I was being extremely indecisive about the shoes. Thanks, Mom, for recognizing that I was very close to being shoeless at my wedding, and just taking care of business.

Nine simple ways to infuse personality into your wedding

Nine simple ways to infuse personality into your wedding
It’s your big day. So it goes without saying that your wedding should reflect your style and your partner’s, as well. While choosing the perfect dress, venue and theme all play a huge role, it’s also the little things that can set your wedding apart from the rest, making it totally unique and tailored to your personality.
Here are some easy ways to infuse your wedding with a style that’s unmistakably yours:
Save the Date Cards. Sending an early reminder to let everyone know about your special day not only gives your guests plenty of time to clear their calendars, it offers you an opportunity to grab their attention with your own unique design. From traditional to trendy, sophisticated to silly, it’s easy to design save the date cards that are uniquely ‘you’. Add your own special photos and choose from unique card formats like save the date magnets for the fridge, environmentally-friendly postcards, and more.
2012051106172719 Nine simple ways to infuse personality into your wedding
Thank You Cards. While your big day may be over, it needn’t be forgotten. Sending personalized thank you cards is a great way show appreciation to your guests. Conjuring up memories with a great photo from the wedding gives your correspondence a warm, unique feel.
Food. Wedding food should be delicious, but don’t be afraid to make yours original. Including your favorite foods is a great way to personalize a wedding beyond the traditional entree choices. For example, food stations or food “bars” are becoming hugely popular for that very reason. From mashed potato bars with all the fixings, to strawberry shortcake and s’mores bars, this is an easy way to make your wedding your own.
Decorations. Whether it’s a table-top umbrella inspired by a trip to Bali, a whimsical floral arrangement representing your first date, or anything else you can conjure up, decorations should be all about you. Don’t be afraid to move away from more traditional designs—as long as your choices are tasteful.
Favors. From personalized mint and candy tins, to tealight holders and glass photo coasters, there are so many unique wedding favor ideas out there, it’s hard not to find something that fits your personal style. A quick online search can help you come up with ideas that’ll inspire something that’s truly one-of-a-kind.
Music/Dance. If you want something that’s really ‘you’ and not just another overdone wedding song, be sure to do a quick search for “top wedding songs” of the year and avoid them like the plague. Unless, of course, a particular song has some real meaning to you. Close your eyes and picture yourself walking down the aisle to a particular song. Does it conjure up the emotion you desire? The same rules apply throughout the ceremony and reception. Never choose a piece that doesn’t reflect you – just because someone else likes it better. This is your day.
Cake. From quilted and piped wedding cakes— to traditional, fresh-flower and bejeweled styles, think of your cake as a blank canvas for creativity. But the fact is, you needn’t choose a cake at all! Today’s brides can choose from candy, cereal and cookie buffets, cupcake-cakes, pie assortments, ice cream stations, fresh pastries (with a barista serving custom hot drinks), croquembouche, even carnival food! Just make it your own.
Flowers. Your floral selection should, of course, be a true reflection of you. But keep in mind, there are plenty of alternatives to wedding flowers that may be a better fit. Bauble-filled vases, pots filled with local wildflowers, even carved glass or wood flowers can make beautiful tablescapes. Many brides have chosen bouquets made from feathers, ornate brooches, and even sticks and branches! Look around for something that fits your style.
womens heels. Decorated flip-flops and blinged-out sneakers have become a favorite for brides and bridesmaids after they kick off their uncomfortable heels. But there are so many new ideas out there. From lace foot liners to beaded bare feet, the world is your oyster when it comes to finding unique wedding shoes.
Remember to let the groom express his personality, too! One easy way to stamp a bit of personality on the wedding is by having him choose a totally unique boutonniere. Whether he wants a classic look with a little twist, something handmade, or something totally kitschy and fun, it’s sure to put a smile on everyone’s face.
